Parents of abandoned infant girl arrested

TURA, Aug 5 - Acting quickly after a baby girl was abandoned by her parents after birth in an auto rickshaw a few days ago, West Garo Hills (WGH) police on Tuesday found the parents of the girl and later arrested the duo.

The baby was found in the Rongkhon Songital locality in Tura and later taken care of by the District Child Protection Unit after being rescued and was later being cared for at Lawei Baphyrnai Specialised Adoption Agency, Shillong.

The parents identified as Sujit Barman and Mery S Sangma were arrested under section 317 of IPC (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years by parents or person having care of it). Barman is an employee of sericulture department and is a resident of Tikrikilla while the mother is from Songsak.

�The parents have confessed that they had abandoned the child after being discharged from the Holy Cross Hospital, Tura on July 28�, said the Superintendent of Police (SP), WGH, Mukesh Singh. The investigation was carried out by women police cell, WGH. �The parents are yet to be produced in court�, Singh added.
