Panels to receive sexual harassment complaints in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, April 3 - East Khasi Hills district authority has directed that all public and privateorganisations having more than ten workers must constitute Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) for receiving complaints of sexual harassment in the workplace.

The order issued today has been taken in accordance with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.

The order stated that complaints with regard to non-compliance of the direction may be intimated to the Office of the DC.

Meanwhile, Local Complaints Committee has been constituted in the office of the DC, East Khasi Hills, in accordance with the Act. The decision to form ICC has been taken after demand for such committees gained momentum following complaints of such harassment in workplaces.

Recently, a female peon alleged of harassment at the hands of Director of Soil and Water Conservation, D Langstieh. The woman alleged that she was assigned �non-official work� by the Director.

She further alleged that the Director pestered her to spend the night at his residence as her house is close to the official quarter.

Following the allegations, the Government has instituted a departmental inquiry and Chief Secretary KS Kropha has assured that ICCs would be constituted in all the Government departments.
