By Staff Correspondent

JORHAT, March 1 - The one-man inquiry committee constituted by the Government to probe into the incident of 155 deaths reportedly caused due to consumption of spurious liquor in Golaghat and Jorhat districts organised a public hearing at Golaghat Circuit House on Thursday.

A district administration source stated that a large number of people, including representatives of various organisations from Golaghat town and from the liquor tragedy-affected areas came to the Circuit House to present their statements before the Upper Assam Commissioner Julie Sonowal.

The Government had asked Sonowal to submit the probe report within 30 days of issuing the order of announcing the constitution of the inquiry. The order was issued on February 22.

Meanwhile, the Golaghat and Jorhat police authorities have constituted special investigation teams (SITs) to probe the multiple hooch death cases.

Three cases have been registered under different sections of the IPC and 34 people arrested in connection with the spurious liquor deaths case, a Golaghat police source stated. More arrests were likely to be made, the source added.

In Jorhat district too, a SIT comprising 14 officers under Titabor sub-division has been constituted to investigate the spurious liquor deaths case.

Among the over 10 people arrested in Jorhat district were Jitu Sonowal and Sunil Baruah, who are alleged to have distributed the adulterated liquor at Bajalikota in Titabor Civil sub-division. The duo was arrested from Baksa four days ago.
