Panbazar residents suffering due to open drain

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 18 Decision over the flow of the open drain in Panbazar flyover point is still pending as the citizens continue to suffer in the surrounding localities.

Though the water supply that was disrupted for last ten days in the area has been restored today, many people of the locality are getting muddy water, and people are also not sure whether the flow of the drain would be changed in view of the upcoming multi-level car parking place.

The drain on GNB Road, Panbazar near the Panbazar overbridge point was dug by the PWD authorities, which severed the water supply link in the area and blocked the flow of drain water. As the local people protested after drain water entered the campuses of many houses, the work was stopped on the site.

After the incident, the local people, former councilors, Save Guwahati Build Guwahati members, many senior citizens of the area and public activists sat for a meeting with the PWD and the GMC authorities on Thursday. In the meeting it was unanimously decided that changing the natural flow of the drain would aggravate the problem of artificial flood in the area, former MLA and a local resident Ajoy Dutta told The Assam Tribune.

The meeting was participated by local MLA Capt. Robin Bordoloi, SGBG president Dhiren Baruah, and the PWD and GMC authorities. It was decided in the meeting that the issue would be discussed with the GDD Minister as it is necessary to apprise him of the situation that would emerge if the flow of the drain is changed from south to north. However, due to the busy schedule of the minister concerned, the matter is yet to be sorted out, he added.

The drain, which has been dug in front of Swagat Complex, is still open though a makeshift bamboo bridge has been constructed as a temporary measure after the citizens protest. However, the residents of the area are waiting for a permanent measure that does not affect the natural water flow in the area.
