GUWAHATI, May 27 - On the eve of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, which is celebrated on May 28, Bidisha Saikia, who runs the Bleed with Dignity campaign, collaborated with Parijat Academy to host a wall mural painting by renowned artist Neelim Mahanta here today.
Bidisha is a Guwahati-based student who has started a campaign on technology platform change.org asking the Government of Assam to install sanitary pad vending machines at all government schools of Assam.
Commissioner of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Debeswar Malakar was the chief guest and inaugurated the wall mural today. Speaking at the event, he said, I congratulate Bidisha Saikia on starting this petition and celebrating this event with art. Many girls in Assam still feel shy to ask for a sanitary pad, so if pads are made available in schools itself through vending machines then it becomes easy for girls to access it; also breaking the stigma around menstruation.
He said it is important to have similar vending machines installed at other public places like bus stands and railway stations.
