Padmanath Gohain Baruah�s statue unveiled at Tinsukia

DOOMDOOMA, Nov 3 - A statue of �Sahitya Kandari� Padmanath Gohain Baruah, the first president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha (ASS) was unveiled on the premises of the Tinsukia Sakha Sahitya Sabha (TSSS) Bhawan at Rongagora road of Tinsukia town on Monday. The statue was unveiled by the ASS president Kuladhar Saikia in presence of a distinguished gathering.

Addressing an interactive programme after inaugurating the statue, the ASS chief said that the Sabha would soon launch a digital project that would incorporate initially all valuable manuscripts of legendary tales, folklore, literature, language and culture would be globally accessible. The project will be community-based where people from every nook and corner will contribute in this massive exercise, Saikia added. To take Assamese language and literature close to the young children, the Sabha president observed that parents had a pivotal role to play in this regard. He also urged the parents to encourage their children to participate in various literary programmes by the ASS.

The ASS president applauded the gesture of Tilak Handique and Swarnalata Handique who donated an amount of Rs 7.50 lakh for the construction of the statue.

The meeting was chaired by TSSS president Tilak Handique and was moderated by the former president of Tinsukia Zila Sahitya Sabha (TZSS) Dr Girish Handique. TSSS secretary Arunima Handique explained the objectives of the meeting. ASS secretary Jadav Sharma, TZSS president Arjun Baruah and several other dignitaries were present in the meeting. Various organisations including the Sabha units of Tinsukia district felicitated the Sabha president Kuladhar Saikia in the meeting.
