Padma Shri to Mahim Bora, Mamang Dai

NEW DELHI, Jan 25 � Noted short story writer, author and former president of Asam Sahitya Sabha (ASS) Mahim Bora is among five personalities of North-east to be awarded with Padma Shri this year.

Though none from the North-east have made it to the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan lists this year, those who were honoured with Padma Shri included noted litt�rateur Mamang Dai of Arunachal Pradesh (Literature and education), Buangi Sailo of Mizoram, Khangembam Mangi Singh (Art - Traditional Music of Manipur (Pena) and Nameirakpam Kunjarani Devi of Manipur (Sport � weightlifting).

Mahim Bora born in1924 is one of Assam�s best known short story writers. He served as the president, Asam Sahitya Sabha in 1989. He was recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award in 2001 for novel Edhani Mahir Hahi.

Padma Awards, the country�s highest civilian awards, are conferred in three categories. The awards are given in all disciplines. �Padma Vibhushan� is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; �Padma Bhushan� for distinguished service of high order and �Padma Shri� for distinguished service in any field. The awards would be conferred by the President at a function to be held at Rashtrapati Bhawan sometime around March-April.
