Padma Hazarika, others from Sootea quit AGP

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 30 The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today suffered a major setback in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls as all the members of the party under Sootea constituency headed by legislator Padma Hazarika resigned from the party. However, they are not joining any national party and decided to constitute an organisation named Sootea constituency Suraksha and Unnayan Mancha.

Talking to The Assam Tribune this evening, Padma Hazarika said that the head office of the AGP in Sootea constituency has been turned into the head office of the Mancha and the flag of the party would be sent to the head office of the AGP with due honour.

Giving details of the events leading to todays development, Hazarika said that the present leadership of the AGP took advantage of his unintentional mistake during the voting of the Rajya Sabha polls and suspended him from the party without even issuing a show cause notice. The constituency and district committees of the party met the central leadership and requested them to reconsider the decision. However, the central committee of the party failed to show positive attitude in this regard and today all the members of the AGP in the constituency along with members of the sister organisations of the regional party tendered their resignation.
