DERGAON, Nov 21 - Though the decision of demonetisation by the Union Government has been widely accepted by the people of Assam too but the lack of availability of new currency notes has hit the normal life of the common people.
Along with the daily activities of the common people, the seasonal works of the farmers have been severely affected by the demonetization. As this is high time for the harvesting of paddy crops, but the farmers are till now uncertain. The early variety of paddy crop Aijung is in a full ripened state as, but the farmers cannot go to the paddy fields as they are unable to engage the wagers i.e., dawani to harvest the crop. The farmers are seriously affected by demonetisation and they have no new currency notes to pay the dawanis. The male members are forced to stand in queues before the ATMs which are functional only for a few hours per day.
On the other hand, those who could get cash from the ATMs are facing trouble as the Rs 2000 note is meaningless in village areas. As a result the ripened paddy crops are getting damaged in the fields due to non harvesting at proper time, he added. On being contacted, the in-charge of ATM of Dergaon SBI Bubul Bora revealed that altogether 12 ATMs are functioning under Dergaon branch of SBI at present. Among them five are managed by the SBI itself while the other seven are managed by outsourcing agencies. The official also informed that all the five ATMs managed directly by SBI are providing 24 hours service. He also revealed that the currency note of Rs 500 denomination is still not available at Dergaon SBI. On the contrary, the customers here alleged that only two ATMs of SBI are giving 24 hours service but that too with mostly Rs 2000 notes and some Rs 100 notes. It is pertinent to mention that there are two ATMs of UBI at Dergaon but there services are not proper. The villagers here urged the government to make all new notes available at the ATM with high amount of withdrawal limit as early as possible.
