Overcoming all barriers

By Sanjoy Kumar Hazarika

DERGAON, June 7 - Three students from Golaghat district secured ranks in the HSLC examination, but the result of a student who passed just with third division has caught the eyes of the residents.

Rajdeep Baruah from Majiukuchi Kakodonga secured the 9th rank, but a student appearing from Kakodonga HS School in Kakodonga, 25 km from Dergaon town, also made it to the news, even though he secured third division and letter marks in one subject.

Shiba Sobor, a differently abled student from the remote flood-prone area of Naamkhatowal under Dergaon Constituency passed the HSLC examination overcoming physical, financial and geographical barriers. He scored 43.32 per cent marks and 83 marks in Private Security NSQF elective subject.

Shiba told this correspondent that he was happy with his result. I will try for the next stage if my health permits, he said.

The son of Kartik Sobor and Soni Sobor, Shiba suffered a lot due to his physical disability. His grandfather Babujan Sobor said that he was the only ray of hope for the poor family. We all expect a better life for him, he said.

Being the son of marginal daily wagers, he faced financial hardship during his studies. Poor road connectivity in his area also compelled him not to use the wheelchair provided by a government agency.

Nayanjyoti Bhuyan, a student leader of Kakodonga, said Shibas result would open the eyes of academicians, political leaders and community members.

KHSS principal Jyoti Hazarika said Shiba he did not get any special assistance during his studies. He secured his result only because of his will power, the principal said.
