Over 94,000 hit by flood in Nalbari dist

NALBARI, June 29 - The flood situation in Nalbari district slightly improved on Monday as water levels in all the rivers maintained a receding trend. According to official sources, the flood submerged 94 villages under seven revenue circles and affected a total population of 96,146 so far.

Sources said 35 villages under Barkhetri revenue circle have been hit. Flood waters have submerged 17 villages under Tihu circle, 13 villages under Paschim Nalbari, 12 under Barbhag, eight under Banekuchi, five under Ghograpar and four under Nalbari revenue circle.

The floods damaged crops in 3,493 hectares. Besides, 62,812 domestic animals have also been affected. In Nalbari district, the Mora Pagladia river breached its embankment at four places under Tihu and Paschim Nalbari circles. The flood has also washed away two roads, disrupting communication.

SDRF personnel engaged at Tihu managed to rescue 39 people who had been marooned following a breach by the Mora Pagladia river. The district administration has distributed relief materials among some of the worst-affected people.

ANN Service from Hatsingimari adds: The flood situation in Southsalmara Mankachar district is grim and the water levels of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries have been rising alarmingly, while many new areas of the district have been submerged. As per the water gauge reading on Monday morning, the flood water was flowing 85 cm above the danger level. More than 150 villages have been submerged, with thousands of hectares of cropland with jute, paddy and vegetables being destroyed. Many affected people have taken shelter on some higher ground along with their domesticated animals.
