JORHAT, Dec 5 - Polling in entire Jorhat district passed off peacefully with over 70 per cent recorded till last reports came in the evening to the district headquarters.
Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Narayan Konwar told this newspaper that Jorhat election district (Jorhat Sadar subdivision) recorded over 70 per cent as per last reports came in around 6 pm while Titabar election district (Titabar Civil subdivision) recorded about 70 per cent as per last reports received.
Stating that no untoward incident was reported during the polling period, Konwar said that the voting percentage figure in both the subdivisions was likely to increase.
Konwar also confirmed that a report from Titabar subdivisional administration stated that voters of a polling station (Kharikatia LP School under Dakhin Katani Bagisa Gaon Panchayat) reportedly abstained from casting their votes after a section of the local residents allegedly found their names missing in the voters� list.
BJP charge: Meanwhile, Jorhat district BJP unit president Santanu Pujari alleged that a BJP member Aiseng Handique of Lahdoigarh outskirts here last night was attacked by two persons �Dipak Handique and Tultul Hatibaruah � with Tultul reportedly a son of a local Congress leader Dilip Hatibaruah, who is a former GP president. The injured member has been shifted to the AMCH, Dibrugarh for advanced treatment.
Addressing mediapersons here this evening, Pujari informed that an FIR has been lodged with the police in this connection and alleged that out of �fear and desperation� the Congress was resorting to violent tactics.
Golaghat polling: Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Gaurav Bothra told this newspaper that polling percentage in the entire district till last reports came in at 6 pm was over 70 per cent which included the Golaghat Sadar, Bokakhat and Dhansiri subdivisions. There are over 1000 polling stations in the entire district. Bothra said the figure was likely to increase.
Majuli district: Majuli Deputy Commissioner Debaprasad Misra told The Assam Tribune that till last reports came in at 6 pm, 75 per cent polling was recorded in all 201 polling stations across the island including the chaporis. The figure was expected to go up as polling was still continuing in the evening, he added.
