GUWAHATI, Feb 3 The crackdown launched by police and security forces against NDFB(S) ultras led to arrest of even militants wanted in connection with the killings in Baska district on the first two days of May last year.

A massive crackdown has been launched against the NDFB(S) following the massacre of over 70 people by it in the districts of Sonitpur and Kokrajhar on December 23 last. During the operations, militants wanted in connection with the Baska killings got into the security net.

Security sources told The Assam Tribune that so far more than 70 militants have been arrested since the crackdown was launched, while three were killed. Sources said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has already registered four cases in connection with the December 23 killings, and during investigation, the national agency found that among those arrested were at least seven militants, who were wanted for their involvement in the killings in Baska on May 1 and 2.

Sources said all those arrested in the recent crackdown have been questioned by the NIA as part of the investigation of the cases registered. Twelve members of the NDFB(S) are still in the custody of the NIA. It may be mentioned here that the NIA had earlier registered three cases in connection with the killings in May and a chargesheet was also filed in this connection. Following the questioning of those arrested in the recent crackdown, the NIA found that seven of them were involved in the Baska killings and they have been taken into custody by the NIA for further questioning.
