Over 50 pc tracks under NFR to be electrified

GUWAHATI, June 4 - Work on preparation of Detailed Project report (DPR) for electrification at various sections is in progress and more than 50 per cent of the total railway tracks under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone will be electrified by March 2020.

�Work on preparation of DPR is in progress for sections where electrification was sanctioned during 2018-19. Notable among these sections are Rangiya-Rangapara-Harmuti-Naharlagun (339 km), Harmuti-Murkongselek (230 km), Badarpur-Silchar section together with Arunachal-Jiribam and Katakhal-Bhairabi section, Badarpur-Karimganj-Agartala-Sabroom section together with Agartala-Akhaura and Karimganj-Mahishashan section (total 590 km) and Mariani-Jorhat Town-Furkating and Tinsukia Junction-Makum Juntion-Tirap together with Makum-Dangri section (174 km),� said Pranav Jyoti Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NFR.

He said that railway electrification work in the NFR zone has been accelerated during the last two years.

�It is expected that by March next year, more than 50 per cent of the total 6,242 km of the railway tracks under NFR will be electrified. While a total of 534 km of railway lines has already been electrified, additional 2,631 km of railway line will be electrified by March 2020. At present, 21 pairs of passenger trains and 14 goods trains running on electric traction originate from NFR and go out towards other zones. This figure is expected to increase as more and more sections get commissioned,� said Sharma.
