GUWAHATI, Aug 16 - Though there is a temporary lull in the rainfall activities for the past couple of days, the overall flood situation in the State is yet to show a significant sign of improvement.
The current wave of flood, which began on August 10, has affected a total population of 33,45,442 and has so far taken a toll of altogether 39 human lives. Altogether 2,970 villages under 82 revenue circles of 25 districts are still submerged by floodwaters.
In total 41,871 people have been evacuated by the NDRF, SDRF, CRPF, Army, police and forest and civil administration personnel and local people, stated the Assam State Disaster Management Authority in its evening flood bulletin today.
The Brahmaputra is flowing above danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri. Its tributaries Dhansiri (South), Jia Bharali, Kopili and Beki are also flowing above danger level. In the Barak valley, the Kushiyara is flowing above danger level at Karimganj.
The flood-affected districts are Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Morigaon, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. A total of 3,34,025 hectares of cropland in 31 districts have been affected by floods. The floodwaters have also affected 9,62,426 big animals, 5,54,281 small animals and 11,66,110 poultry.
The State Chief Secretary held a video conference with deputy commissioners of the affected districts this evening to review the flood situation.
Today, airdropping of provisions was done in flood-hit areas of Dhubri and South Salmara districts.
