Over 3,000 litres of local liquor seized and 10 people apprehended by Kamrup (M) excise dept since Feb 22

GUWAHATI, Feb 27 - Personnel of the Excise department seized more than 650 litres of local liquor and around 1,000 kilograms of raw material used in making liquor.

In a statement, the district administration said the operation was jointly carried out by the district Excise department and Excise Intelligence Bureau in the adjoining places of Maligaon like Mithaam, Adingiri, Segunbari, etc. During the operation, the officials also seized a DI van in the Bharalumukh area, which was ferrying around 450 litres of local liquor from Rangiya to the city.

According to the Superintendent of Excise, during the operation, altogether four persons were arrested on charges of illegally producing local liquor and three persons on charges of consuming liquor in public places.

The Kamrup (Metro) district Excise department has seized over 3,000 litres of local liquor and apprehended more than 10 people since February 22.

The department has intensified its raid against production and consumption of local liquor after the hooch tragedy that struck some areas of upper Assam recently, claiming over 150 lives.

�In Guwahati, hilly areas and the areas near the railway tracks are the main production places of local liquor. Moreover, as per information gathered from some places like Jagiroad and Rangiya, the local liquor is exported by some people to Guwahati,� Debajit Nath, Superintendent of the Excise, Kamrup (M), told The Assam Tribune.
