GUWAHATI, March 16 With drunken driving and crime against property, particularly in the night hours, becoming a major cause of concern in Guwahati city, the City Police Commissionerate has initiated a series of steps to deal with the problems and to ensure visible presence of police throughout the night. Motorcycle squads have also been formed to ensure patrolling in the lanes and bye-lanes of the city.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, Guwahati City Police Commissioner Mukesh Agarwala admitted that one of the major problems for the city is drunken driving in night hours, which causes most of the accidents. He said a special drive was launched since last night against drunken driving and more than 270 cases were registered within the night.

However, police teams can check at one place only for a few minutes as the word of such checks spreads very fast and the drunk drivers avoid the roads where such checks take place. However, he asserted that the drive against drunken driving would continue and strict action as per law would be taken against the offenders as is done in other metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai.

Agarwala revealed that eight teams consisting of four motorcycles each have been formed for area domination, particularly in the lanes and bye-lanes of the city. He said patrolling by such teams during the day would augment police visibility, while night patrolling is expected to deal with the issue of crime against property, which has become a major problem for the people of the city.

As Guwahati city has been divided into three zones after formation of the Police Commissionerate, at least one gazetted officer would be on night patrol from midnight in each zone. This will boost the confidence of the police personnel deployed on the roads at night and will also ensure that everyone does his or her duties properly, said Agarwala. In fact, Agarwala himself held a meeting of the officers posted in the city from midnight yesterday, hoping to give a morale booster to the police personnel on night duty.

Agarwala pointed out that as all the police personnel are not on night duty, those who remain free at night, have been asked to report to the parade ground at Police Reserve in the morning and teams would go out for morning walks through the city localities. This will not only improve the fitness level of the police personnel, but also help in augmenting police-public relations, he said. However, he admitted that it would be unfair to expect those who work till late in the night to come to the parade ground in the morning.
