Over 10000 students conferred degrees

DIBRUGARH, March 18 - Governor of Assam and the Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Professor Jagdish Mukhi today conferred various degrees on some 10608 students including PhD and M Phil degrees during the varsity�s 18th convocation organised within its campus here.

He also conferred D Litt (honoris causa) degree on eminent litterateur and poet Nilamani Phookan and DSc (honoris causa) degree on Padma Shri recipient and innovator Udhhab Bharali. Nilamani Phookan was conferred the degree in absentia while Uddhab Bharali received the degree directly from the Governor. About 114 PhD and 78 M Phil candidates also received their degrees from the Governor during the convocation ceremony. Other conferred degrees included 1598 post graduate degrees and 8816 under graduate degrees of various streams and disciplines.

Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu was scheduled to attend the function as its chief guest and deliver the convocation address. But his visit had to be cancelled at the last-minute due to the demise of former Union Defence Minister and Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parikkar and subsequent declaration of national mourning today. His speech was however read out to the congregation.

The Governor in his address said that Dibrugarh University could play a vital role and be instrumental in translating the Act East Policy of Government of India into a reality, given its geo-strategic location in terms of proximity to the counries like China, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan. �Situated in a region of immense ecological and ethno-cultural diversity, Dibrugarh University is blessed with the potential of creating excellent human resources to harness the natural resources of the region as well as conducting research into the manifold values of traditional and indigenous knowledge of the area,� he said.

Appreciating the varsity for introducing courses on Bodo, Mising, Deori and Karbi, the Governor said that local languages must be accorded utmost respect and the University must incorporate teaching on indigenous languages for their promotion. He said that universities ought to find out different ways to address the contemporary issues of the society effectively.
