Over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases detected in State

GUWAHATI, July 20 - The mounting COVID-19 positive cases in Assam rose to 25,092, with the detection of 1,093 new cases in the last 24 hours. The toll extracted by the pandemic in the State stood at 58. The number of recovered patients is over 17,000 till date.

Meanwhile, Guwahati which continues to account for nearly half of the cases in the State entered the first phase of unlock from today.

Guwahati added 448 new cases, taking its total cases to over 10,000, most of those having been detected in the last couple of weeks.

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted that the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine trial had now been published. �The vaccine is safe, well-tolerated, and immunogenic. These results are extremely encouraging,� he said, terming it as a �huge positive development�.

As Guwahati started to limp back to normal following three weeks of shutdown which was aimed at checking spread of COVID-19, reports of different sections of people getting infected continued to pour in.

Besides Guwahati, Golaghat, Jorhat and Silchar have emerged as possible hotbeds of the virus, the Health Minister had earlier said.

Dispur MLA Atul Bora of the ruling BJP was detected with the virus this morning and shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital here.

Over 70 people in the Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor, have been so far detected with COVID-19.

Several relaxations in the lockdown norms in Kamrup (Metro) district, under which Guwahati comes, have come into force from today.

Business establishments and offices have been allowed to open with limited employees and under certain restrictions as notified by the government.

A 12-hour night curfew remained clamped across the State, while ban on inter-district travel of individuals would come into effect from July 22.
