Over 100 students fall sick in Ratabari

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, Aug 19 - At a time when the entire nation was jolted by the tragic incident of children dying in a hospital in Uttar Pradeshs Gorakhpur due to alleged medical negligence, on Thursday over 100 students of Azad MV school in Ratabari constituency in Karimganj district were found in a serious condition after they consumed deworming tablets. The cadres of NSUI have expressed deep anguish over the incident and burnt effigies of Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday charging the minister of being responsible for the alleged incident.

Talking to this correspondent, Karimganj Deputy Commissioner Pradip Kumar Talukdar said, around 35 affected students were treated at the Chargola PHC and sent back to their residences on Thursday. However, on Friday, five more students were taken to the Karimganj Civil Hospital for treatment. This is a case of possible negligence on the part of the teachers in giving the tablets to the students properly.

A magisterial probe has been initiated and the Joint Director of Health Services has been asked to collect a report of the validity of the medicines from the Inspector of Drugs. Further, suspecting foul play behind the incident, the Deputy Commissioner informed that strict action will be taken against the guilty.

Meanwhile, reports of similar incidents have taken everyone by surprise in Cachar districts Jirighat area where some students of Abhinash Mishra LP School mysteriously fell sick and were taken to the Lakhipur PHC for treatment.
