AGARTALA, March 14 - In the wake of a public outcry, the police have lodged an FIR against Saurabh Paul for allegedly raping a 22-year-old woman before burning her body at Rangacherra village in Mohanpur subdivision of West Tripura district.
A case has been registered under Sections 376 and 306 of the IPC against Paul, a driver by profession, at the Sidhai Police Station and an in-depth investigation has been initiated, said West Tripura SP Manik Das.
The charred body of the woman was found on a paddy field at Rangacherra on Friday. The deceaseds family alleged that Paul had raped and murdered her.
The victims mother, however, was not allowed to speak to a visiting Congress delegation headed by former PCC president Gopal Roy.
We went to Rangacherra to ascertain the facts of the incident as it had shocked the entire State. But the victims mother was forced to enter the hut when she was narrating the incident to us, said Subal Bhowmik, a senior Congress leader at a press conference.
Bhowmik further alleged that a journalist, Jakir Hussain, who went to gather information about the gruesome incident, was heckled by BJP-backed goons. An anarchy-like situation is prevailing in the State under the BJP rule as it has become unsafe for women. This particular incident shows that criminals have a free run under the Biplab Kumar Deb-led Government, he alleged.
The CPI(M)s women wing, All India Democratic Womens Association (AIDWA), today took out a massive rally seeking speedy justice for the victim. The women are no longer safe under the BJP regime and the Rangacherra incident is a glaring example of that, said Rama Das, president of the AIDWA.
The ruling BJP also condemned the incident and demanded stringent action against the culprits. The way the 22-year-old was burnt to death has shocked and terrified us. The party wants that the accused persons should be awarded exemplary punishment, said party spokesman Nabendu Bhattacharjee.
He also exhorted the Oppositions not to indulge in politics over the shocking incident.
