GUWAHATI, March 6 - The district transport department of Kamrup Metro will look for an alternative arrangement in coming days if the city buses do not agree to follow the recently introduced transport rules.
This was stated by RTA secretary Bapan Kalita while talking to this reporter today.
Meanwhile, the strike resorted to by a section of city bus drivers and handymen was withdrawn in the second half of the day following a discussion between the agitators and transport department officials.
�In Guwahati, some drivers have been driving city buses without having a proper driving licence. So, this time we formulated a new set of rules aimed at ensuring passenger safety. We are bound to implement these rules,� Kalita said.
In Guwahati, there are altogether 669 vehicles registered as city buses under the transport department, 500 of which remain on the road daily on an average, Kalita said, adding that around 15 lakh people use the city bus service everyday in Guwahati, most of them whom are students and people belonging to the lower middle class segment.
�We have discussed the matter with the Deputy Commissioner and the traffic police officials and have decided to implement the new rules at any cost,� Kalita added.
