GUWAHATI, Jan 18 - One of the ostriches brought recently from Ranchi died at the Assam State Zoo last night.
The male ostrich, around three years of age, was suffering from chronic diarrhoea.
During the post mortem, a foreign material resembling a metal was found in the birds stomach. It is being tested.
It was suffering from diarrhoea for the last few days. In the last three to four days, it could not even sit. Veterinarians were constantly monitoring it, but it succumbed at midnight, Zoo DFO Tejas Mariswamy said.
The Zoo had got a pair of ostriches after nearly 20 years.
A pair of ostriches and two striped hyenas were brought from the Ranchis Bhagwan Borsa Biological Park as part of an animal exchange programme approved by the Central Zoo Authority about two months back. One of the hyenas died recently due to stress-related ailments. Staff Reporter
