GUWAHATI, July 25 � Governor of Assam JB Patnaik on Monday stressed on proper presentation of the original literary pieces in the translated works so as not to deprive the readers of the charm of the original.
Releasing the translated work of the Assamese Jibon Juktir Bahirat in Oriya at a function held at Pragjyoti ITA Centre for Performing Arts, Patnaik praised the effort of both the writer and the translator and said that the work would bring the two States closer. It needs to be mentioned here that Monalisa Jena has translated into Oriya the original Assamese work by Pankaj Thakur.
�Translation should not be literary, and it is very essential that the translator preserves essence of the original in the translated version,� Patnaik said.
Tracing the historical relationship and similarity between Assamese and Oriya languages, the Governor said that an Oriya speaker would easily understand Assamese and vice versa due to the commonalities between the languages.
Dwelling on the art of translation, Patnaik said that while some believed that translation could be totally faithful without being beautiful, �yet I can say from my experience that both these aspects of faithfulness and beauty can be retained in the translated version.�
The Governor, who himself is an acclaimed translator with many translations of prose and poetic works to his credit, said that Assamese is a rich language and provides immense scopes for translation.
Noted critic and translator Pradip Acharya, while terming the book as a fulfilling addition to a new trend in Assamese literature, said that it reflected a wide array of events and developments in the author�s life.
Veteran journalist and translator DN Bezboruah lauded the efforts of the author and the translator, and said that translation alone provided a writer with the opportunity to get intimate with the soul of a greater readership in other languages.
