JORHAT, July 11 - Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Narayan Konwar has directed the Brahmaputra Board and State Water Resources department officials to expedite the ongoing protection work being carried out by them at Nimatighat on the outskirts here to prevent massive erosion by the Brahmaputra.
Konwar while chairing the monthly district development committee meeting here yesterday, reviewed the progress of the embankment protection and strengthening works at length by the State Water Resources department and the Board.
A district administration source stated that the Deputy Commissioner asked the officials of the Board and the State Water Resources department to speed up the work under way at Nimatighat.
The source said that Konwar also asked Board officials to attend the monthly-held district development committee meetings regularly.
It may be mentioned here that the government earlier this year had released funds in two packages � Rs 1.76 crore for one component and Rs 14.9 crore for the other component.
AASU and several other student bodies, including AJYCP, earlier had staged protests at Nimatighat and in front of the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner�s office demanding the government to immediately carry out protection work to check erosion.
The waterway communication link to river island Majuli is from Nimatighat in Jorhat district, which during the past three decades has witnessed massive river bank erosion leading to the ghat being shifted from one place to another at frequent intervals despite several projects being undertaken by the government.
Konwar in the DDC meeting further discussed about a project that will be soon launched initially in villages under Teok revenue circle.
The source stated that as per the project, a system will be put in place so that the administration can easily to know about the delivery of various benefits under government�s welfare schemes to the beneficiaries.
The number of eligible beneficiaries that remained untouched by different government welfare schemes could be known under the proposed system so that they could avail the benefits, the source said.
The Deputy Commissioner also took stock of progress of series of development and welfare projects and schemes being implemented, the source added.
