KALAIGAON, Jan 25 - Tigers of Orang National Park have been creating panic in nearby villages of Udalguri district for the last four months.
The local people of Daipam village in Udalguri district alleged that some tigers of the park have been causing terror in and around Daipam killing their cattle. The matter has already been reported to the Orang National Park authority and Dhansiri Forest Division, Udalguri, for preventive steps, sources said.
It is worth mentioning that a female tiger straying out of the park with two cubs were killed by the people at Borobazar village near Rowta on January 1. The tigress, which came out of Orang National Park, gave birth to two cubs in the village in October last year. People of the village had requested the authority several times for safe translocation of the tigress back to the park. Unfortunately, the park authority didnt pay any attention to their request saying that they could not go out.
Finally, the tigress was poisoned to death by miscreants and the cubs went missing. Surprisingly, the area, where the tigress was killed, was very close to the park (well inside the buffer zone). Regular straying out of tigers from the park is not a new incident.
Being the smallest national park in the country, Orang is the habitat of nearly 40 tigers. But nothing has been done by the park authority to monitor the movement of the tigers in and around the buffer zone villages.
The recent appearance of another tiger at Daipam village has already been reported to PCCF (wildlife), Assam and NTCA. The officials of Dhansiri Forest Division, Udalguri, have been visiting the village for the last two weeks, but could not trace out the animal.
