Opposition stages walk out in Manipur Assembly

IMPHAL, July 20 - Opposition Congress MLAs walked out of Manipur Assembly today in protest against the rejection of their demand for extension of the House session by referring it to Business Advisory Committee (BAC).

The Assembly session began here this morning with obituary references to four departed legislators including former CM RK Dorendro and nine landslide victims of Tamenglong.

The walk out happened minutes after Chief Minister N Biren Singh moved the Sixth report of the BAC in the Assembly for passing around 12.30 pm.

Opposition Congress MLA Kh Joykishan stood up and requested the Speaker Y Khemchand to extend the ongoing Assembly session to discuss key public issues and demanded the matter to be referred to BAC. N Loken of Congress reiterated the same demand.

However, Speaker Khemchand informed the House that the matter of extension of the session can be discussed during the Question Hour on July 23.

Former Chief Minister and opposition leader O Ibobi immediately walked out of the House, followed by former Deputy Chief Minister and senior Congress MLA Gaikhangam, Dr Chaltonlien Amo, TN Haokip and others.

Later three Bills were introduced in the House: The Manipur People�s Bill 2018, The Manipur Liquor Prohibition (Second Amendment) Bill 2018 and The Manipur International University Bill 2018. The Leader of the House also informed that The Manipur People�s Bill 2018 will be referred to Hill Areas Committee.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh also informed the House of the steps taken by the government to solve the Manipur University crisis and the issue of border pillar number 81.
