Opp unites to demand statement from PM

By The Assam Tribune

NEW DELHI, Aug 16 (IANS): The opposition Tuesday rose unitedly against the government handling of the Anna Hazare episode and has decided to demand a statement from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the social activist's detention and the spontaneous mass protests that erupted across the country.

Talking to reporters in the parliament complex, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said the government has "lost its balance" and the prime minister should clarify its stand on the move to detain Hazare ahead of his proposed fast pressing for a stronger Lokpal bill.

"This government has lost its balance and this is displayed in the attitude of the government time to time," Sushma Swaraj said Tuesday.

The opposition leader said leaders of all major opposition parties except the AIADMK and the Bahujan Samaj Party, including the Left, met on the issue.

"We decided that we want the prime minister's statement on whatever is going on. The prime minister should give his statement and it will be discussed because the situation is changing every minute," she said.

Hazare was detained in the morning as he was leaving for Jayaprakash Narayan Park, the venue of his proposed fast, where the police had clamped prohibitory orders, banning any public gathering, Monday night.
