GUWAHATI, Aug 8 A 20-member delegation comprising representatives from seven political parties from the Opposition camp, submitted a memorandum to Governor JB Patnaik at Raj Bhavan today, calling for a halt to any move aimed at dividing Assam further.

The members of the delegation presented to the Governor their views on the present law-and-order situation of the State and maintained that further bifurcation of the State should not be allowed and that peace must be maintained at any cost.

The delegation sought the intervention of the Governor in putting an end to the prevailing violence and to save the State from any further division. The members of the delegation pleaded for justice for the Karbi people and appealed for local self-governments in the Sixth Schedule areas, an official release said.

The Governor thanked the delegation for their support for maintaining a united Assam. He also appreciated their assurance for upholding peace and stability in the State and pointed out that violence was a useless tool to achieve anything.

By violence we cannot solve anything. Unity of Assam must be maintained and justice given to the people, Patnaik said.
