Operation Hillstorm: GNLA cadre killed

TURA, March 2 - Operation Hillstorm, which is currently underway against Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants in Garo Hills, provided another success today with West Khasi Hills(WKH) police shooting dead an unidentified militant of the outfit.

According to a police release, a team comprising of officers and SWAT from WKH had a fierce encounter with a group of GNLA militants which lasted for more than an hour. The encounter took place in Rongtok village in WKH at about 7 am today. The GNLA cadres had allegedly come to the village to collect extortion money. The police were tipped off by the villagers about the presence of the cadres.

Police later recovered the body of an unknown GNLA cadre along with one AK 47 rifle, two magazines, 12 live rounds, one .32 pistol with two live rounds and id card of GNLA area commander Megam from the spot.

�A total of eight GNLA militants under Megam had come to Rongtak to extort money from the villagers. On being tipped off by the villagers, police started combing the area to nab the criminals. The body of the unidentified militant was brought to Shallang in WKH for postmortem.
