SHILLONG, Dec 20 � The youngest face in the Congress-led UPA Government, Agatha Sangma today said �only the people� can rid corruption out of the political system in India.
The Union Minister of State for Rural Development said: �to rid corruption out of the country the people must be part of the solution.�
The UPA Government is fighting several corruption charges, the most notorious being the 2G and Commonwealth Games scams in which thousands of crores of rupees of public money is alleged to have been misappropriated by politicians and officials.
Citing the example of Bihar and Nitish Kumar, she said people voted for a person who has brought in changes into their lives. �The man (Nitish Kumar) changed every equation in Bihar and the people voted because he performed exceedingly well,� she said at the sidelines of a review meeting on Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana here.
The NCP MP implicitly hinted that people elsewhere should exercise such prudence and elect people who are honest and work dedicatedly for the people and show the door to corrupt politicians.
Sangma emphasised corruption is not only being confined to India�s political set-up, but was also gnawing away various aspects of India�s socio-political sphere. �There is a lot of cynicism amongst the people towards all politicians being corrupt, that�s not true. Corruption on the other hand is not confined to political levels, as it has entered various aspects of the country,� she said.
Expressing optimism that it was �not the end of the road,� Sangma said, people were more aware of their rights these days and wrongdoings are therefore being increasingly brought to the public domain.
�This is not the end of the road for anything. The people and the media are more vigilant these days and none can escape after committing something wrong,� the youngest scion of the Sangma family said optimistically.
She added eventually justice would be meted out in the present corruption charges too. �I am certain there would be justice done in the present corruption cases,� she stated.
