Only 626 out of 1,316 ASTC buses in operation at present

GUWAHATI, Sept 6 - The Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) has a total of 1,316 buses in its fleet but only 626 of them are currently operational.

In a written reply to the Legislative Assembly today, Transport Minister CM Patowary said that another 440 buses are at present undergoing repairs, while 250 buses have been found to be beyond repair and steps have been taken to sell those vehicles.

Patowary added that during the past five years ASTC, on a daily basis, had 528 services. However, 181 of them had to be cancelled due to various factors like bandh calls by different outfits and due to operational and logistical reasons like repair of vehicles.

He said the ASTC has purchased 575 new buses during the past five years. In addition, 126 new services have been introduced during the last two years.

The Minister added that over 82,000 cases have been registered under Section 179 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 in the last five years and fines to the tune of Rs 4,10,43,500 have been imposed in this regard.
