Only 12 MPs participated actively in LS proceedings

GUWAHATI, March 29 - Even as voters of Assam and the rest of the country are getting ready to exercise their right to franchise in the forthcoming General Election, it is worthwhile to note that of the 14 members from Assam in the 16th Lok Sabha, Badruddin Ajmal, Radheshyam Biswas, Sushmita Dev, Gaurav Gogoi, RP Sarmah and Rameswar Teli were among the most active inside the House, while the performance of Biren Sing Engti and Pradan Baruah was poor as far as taking part in debates and raising questions is concerned.

Participation in proceedings of the House and raising questions are among the parliamentary parameters that determine activeness of a Member of Parliament (MP).

As per official data, Congress MP from Kaliabor constituency, Gaurav Gogoi, took part in 81 debates and asked 305 questions and three supplementary questions in the current 16th Lok Sabha. Gogoi also introduced five Private Member�s Bills during the last five years.

His party colleague and Silchar MP Sushmita Dev took part in 87 debates, asked 313 questions and four supplementary questions, besides introducing three Private Member�s Bills in the Lok Sabha.

AIUDF MP from Dhubri Badruddin Ajmal participated in 58 debates, raised 409 questions and one supplementary question, while his party�s MP from Karimganj constituency Radheshyam Biswas took part in 62 debates in the 16th Lok Sabha, besides asking 235 questions and one supplementary question.

BJP MP from Tezpur constituency, RP Sarmah, participated in 52 debates, asked 125 questions and four supplementary questions, besides introducing one Private Member's Bill, while Dibrugarh�s BJP MP Rameswar Teli took part in 70 debates, raised 93 questions and introduced one Private Member�s Bill.

Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, BJP MP from Jorhat, took part in 43 debates, asked 111 questions and introduced two Private Member�s Bills.

In the 16th Lok Sabha, AIUDF�s Barpeta MP Sirajuddin Ajmal participated in 27 debates and raised 278 questions.

Bijoya Chakravarty, BJP MP from Guwahati, participated in 44 debates and raised 37 questions, while her party colleague from Mangaldai Ramen Deka took part in 35 debates and asked 97 questions and two supplementary questions, besides introducing one Private Member�s Bill.

Nagaon MP Rajen Gohain took part in 42 debates and raised 23 questions. However, Gohain was inducted into the Union ministry in July 2016.

Kokrajhar�s Independent MP Naba Kumar Sarania participated in 19 debates and asked 80 questions in the 16th Lok Sabha.

However, Congress MP from Diphu constituency, Biren Sing Engti participated in only a single debate and asked only one question. He also introduced one Private Member�s Bill.

Similarly, Pradan Baruah, BJP MP from Lakhimpur, took part in only one debate and asked a single question in the 16th Lok Sabha, as per the official data.
