Online workshop on geographical data analysis held at GU

GUWAHATI, July 18 - The North-East India Geographical Society (NEIGS) in association with the Department of Geography, Gauhati University, conducted an online workshop on the theme �Data Analysis in Geographical Research using R programme� during July 9-16, according to a press release issued here.

The workshop was attended by eighty research scholars and teachers of geography working at different universities and colleges of Assam. Dr Sahana Bhattacharjee of the Department of Statistics, GU, was the resource person.

The inaugural function held on the occasion was presided over by NEIGS president Prof AK Bhagabati. GU Academic Registrar Prof Guruprasad Khataniar in his inaugural speech focused on the increased role of digital mode of teaching-learning in the current pandemic situation.

Workshop coordinator and NEIGS general secretary Prof Bimal K Kar highlighted the need for such scientific data analysis for geographical study. Prof Madhushree Das, Head, Department of Geography, GU, spoke about the course structure of the same, including application of MS-Excel for the benefit of the participants.

Attending the valedictory function on July 16 as chief guest, Prof Kishore K Das, Head of the Department of Statistics, GU, emphasised the need for understanding the theoretical aspects of various statistical measures for meaningful analysis of geographical data.

There was a general view among all the participants that the real success of the workshop would largely depend on regular practice with R and MS-Excel along with understanding the nature of data and right selection of statistical technique. E-certificates were issued to the participants on successful completion of the workshop, the release added.
