Online facility to pay property tax

GUWAHATI, Jan 6 � With the view to streamline the system of taxation and make the payment of property tax hassle free for common citizens, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) today launched a facility for online payment of property tax.

Citizens of Guwahati can log on to www.gmcportal.in to view their property tax bill and make online payment of property tax.

The new facility was launched today by S Vishwanathan, GMC Commissioner, in the presence of senior functionaries of the civic body and of the Reserve Bank of India.

As per it, citizens will have different options for making online payment using three modes -- credit card, debit card and net banking.

Initially the transaction charges for using this online payment facility by the citizens will be borne by the GMC. This online payment facility will be free of cost for the citizens.

Property tax is the prime source of municipal revenue for the GMC.

Presently, there are 1,76,099 holdings within the corporation boundary with a total property tax demand of around Rs 27 crore and a collection of around Rs. 25 crore.

At present property tax is collected in individual zonal offices of the GMC as well as by the tax collectors going house to house for collection.

For the convenience of the taxpayer of the city as well as to enhance the collection performance and for timely collection of property tax GMC had started the initiative for online payment gateway in December 2012 through calling of bids from various payment gateway service providers.

The civic body finally selected the Billdesk as online payment gateway service provider.

Any issue regarding use of this online payment facility can be mailed to [email protected] and the website also contains the terms and conditions of payment along with refund and cancellation policy.

The online payment gateway user manual is uploaded in the website for easy assistance to the citizen for using the service. The contact details of Deputy Commissioners of different zones are available in the website.
