Multi-crore-rupee rice pilferage scam

Staff Reporter

Guwahati, Feb 3: Gundavarapu Sri Siva Raja Sekhar, a former general manager of FCI Regional Office, Assam, was arrested by BIEO today in connection with a multi-crore-rupee rice pilferage scam. He is the sixth person and the fourth former FCI official to be arrested in connection with the scam. The 61-year-old former GM was arrested from Telangana.

The BIEO had registered four cases following directions from the Gauhati High Court in connection with the anomalies regarding transportation of PDS rice-laden trucks from Nagaon to Arunachal Pradesh and from Jorhat to Nagaland. During investigation it was found that several senior FCI officials criminally conspired with FCI transporters, contractors and proprietors of firms namely M/S RKK Enterprise and M/S 4A Enterprise and awarded the contract on the basis of fake bank guarantees.

“In this instant case, the arrested accused Gundavarapu Sri Siva Raja Sekhar wilfully failed to verify the two bank guarantees amounting to Rs 59,07,450 and Rs 31,20,750 and thereby caused loss of crores of public money and also deprived the poor beneficiaries of their due benefits,” BIEO ASP Purabi Mazumdar said.

Rice was to be transported from Haiborgaon FCI godown and Jorhat to Arunachal Pradesh. But the goods were reportedly off-loaded in Sonitpur district in the godown of one Mujibur Rahman who was arrested earlier along with the main contractor Risoo Takka who is the proprietor of RKK Enterprise.
