By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Aug 11 - A 65-year-old woman hailing from West Tripura district, who had been suffering from diabetes, died of COVID-19 in the GB Pant Hospital here on Monday, taking the virus death toll in the State to 43.

Besides, 164 more persons have tested COVID-19 positive in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Tripura Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath has claimed that the State is still in a better position in the ongoing battle against the pandemic despite the rise in the numbers of positive cases and deaths.

Most among the 43 COVID-19 victims were elderly people who had comorbidities like cancer, heart ailments, high blood sugar, liver infection and kidney problems, the minister told reporters here today.

A one-day-old baby having serious complications in his digestive system and excretory tubes had earlier died due to the viral infection. Each death is painful and uncalled for, and our doctors have been doing their best to save the lives of the ill, he pointed out.

Nath said, At present the mortality rate in Tripura stands at 0.67 per cent, while the national rate is 2.01 per cent. The State is also ahead of 32 other States and Union Territories in terms of the recovery rate. The tests per million in Tripura stand at 28,020, which is far ahead of the national average.

The minister added that over two lakh people had already taken COVID-19 tests, which is a massive figure for a State like Tripura. Only Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Goa are ahead of Tripura in terms of per million tests. That is why positive cases have burgeoned to 6,372. Most of the patients have recovered in the course of treatment. As of now, the State has 1,507 patients who are undergoing treatment in COVID treatment centres and COVID Care Centres, added Nath.
