One killed in police firing; IEDs recovered

KALAIGAON/MANGALDAI, April 12 � Although the election passed off peacefully in Kalaigaon constituency yesterday, the situation became tense today following the recovery of two powerful IEDs and death of one person in police firing at Dalanghat.

Darrang police resorted to indiscriminate firing at Dalanghat killing one person this morning. According to information, a group of unruly youths attacked and ransacked the shops belonging to the supporters of a particular political party on the evening of April 11 at Dalanghat Chouck. A huge rally was arranged today at 9 am at Dalanghat Chouk, protesting the incident. They condemned the police for their failure to protect people during Assembly election.

The mob turned violent and attacked the police personnel present there. The police immediately started firing resulting in the death of 26-year-old student named Pankaj Deka, son of Raben Deka and a relative of TMC, candidate Ramesh Chandra Deka of 65 Kalaigaon LAC. He was a TDC student of Burhinagar College. Another person Chakradhar Deka (30) also sustained bullet injury but he is stated to be out of danger.

The incident occurred just after the departure of AGP candidate Mukunda Ram Choudhury from the rally. It has been strongly condemned by all sections of people. According to eye witnesses police could have controlled the situation by other means and firing was not necessary at all.

Meanwhile, GP Singh, IGP, Northern Range, Bisnu Prasad Rabha SP, Darrang along with senior officials of Darrang district administration rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The government has reportedly directed DC,Darrang to conduct a probe into the incident and report within seven days.

AASU Darrang district unit, has strongly condemned the incident and demanded reasonable compensation to the family of the victim.

In another incident two powerful IEDs were recovered from the house of a woman named Bimala Baro, secretary VDP, near Kalaigaon College at 9 am. Police and Army told mediapersons that the woman had found two bombs wrapped in a gift packet in front of her house in the morning. Police and Army personnel from 2 Field Regiment rushed to the spot.Army bomb squad later defused the bombs.
