DHUBRI, May 18 - In a gun battle between police and a group, one dreaded criminal was killed at around 2 am on Monday at Dongerpar area (Tistarpar) under Dharmasala Watch Post of Dhubri PS.

Addressing a press meet, the Superintendent of Police said that the police patrolling party was on a routine patrolling duty, when the police saw the group of 3-4 persons at the Dongerpar area (Tistarpar). The area is near the Indo-Bangladesh border and is about 12 kilometres from Dhubri town area.

It was informed by the SP that when the patrolling party approached the group to find out what they are doing in the area, the group opened fire at the police. After which the police retaliated in self-defence and later it was found that one among the group was seriously injured, while the other managed to flee taking advantage of the darkness, the SP said.

Later, when the police took the injured member of the group to the Dhubri Civil Hospital, he was declared dead by the on-duty doctor. The deceased member of the group has been identified as Shah Alom (35), who was a resident of Barkhola area near Chapar Town of Dhubri district.

It was informed that the deceased has many cases pending in his name. We have got a detail history of Alom and we found that he is a dreaded criminal and there are many cases against him in many districts of lower Assam, the SP said.

Police recovered a 7.65 mm pistol along with a magazine and two cartridges from the spot.

Meanwhile, the locals of the area said that they have heard three rounds of fire at night.

The investigation in this matter is on and police action to apprehend the other members of the group is under way, the SP said, who also added that the entire scenario will be clear only after other members of the group are caught.
