One killed as police fire at ULFA men

SUALKUCHI, Aug 22 � One rickshaw-puller was killed while a minor boy was slightly injured today at 8.30 am when police opened fire at two ULFA men who had come to the residence of Subhrendu Baishya, proprietor of Budram Gas Agency, Sualkuchi at Padma Ram Kakoti Path, to obtain money from Baishya. The police nabbed one Chiraj Ali alias Harekrishna Deka, leader of Kamrup district unit of ULFA but another ULFA man escaped from the place.

The police team led by Harekrishna Nath, Additional SP and Hemanta Kumar Neog, CI of Baihata Chariali PS who were camping nearby, saw the two ULFA men coming in a motorbike and fired at them. But the bullets hit the rickshaw puller Moni Ram Rava (40) with only passenger Dipjyoti Nath (8) who in the meantime found himself in the line of the fire. The police nabbed Chiraj Ali along with a grenade, but the pillion rider escaped from the spot. Moni Ram Rava of Banshar Tiniali and Dipjyoti were later rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital after giving first aid at Mahatma Gandhi 30-bed hospital. However, the rickshaw puller succumbed to his injuries in the afternoon.
