One killed, 35 hurt as truck falls into gorge

SHILLONG, March 2 - One person was killed and 35 others including six minors were injured, when a truck ferrying them fell into a deep gorge in South Garo Hills district in Meghalaya, police said today.

A woman identified as 25-year old DG Momin died on the spot and 35 others were injured, when the truck went off the road on Monday last, they said.

The truck was returning from a weekly market at Chokpot, which is about 50 km from district headquarters town of Baghmara when the accident took place at Raja Ronggat village, a late police report said.

The report said the driver lost control of the vehicle and the police are mulling punitive action against the driver. Among the critically injured passengers were five women who have been shifted to Tura Civil Hospital, a police officer said. � PTI
