According to a police source, prompt action by the police averted a communal clash after members of a religious organisation arrived on the spot and allegedly tried to foment trouble on Wednesday evening

A case No. 2561/2019 under Sections 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion), 295-A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 506 (Criminal intimidation), and 352 (Punishment for assault or criminal force, otherwise on grave provocation) of the IPC was registered against him at the Jorhat Police Station after the tenant (who installed the idol of Viswakarma) lodged an FIR on Wednesday night about the alleged incident, the source said.

The tenant alleged that Borbora on Wednesday evening got enraged after coming to know that the spherical vessel owned by him (Borbora) and used to burn incense, was taken by the tenant to keep some puja paraphernalia and used it for a ritual.

The tenant charged Borbora of vandalising the idol and dumping the items from the vessel on the floor. However, Borbora denied the charge levelled against him, the source stated.

A ruckus was caused after news about the incident spread, with a large number of protesters gathering in front of Borboras residence and demanding strong legal action against him, the source said.

A group of protesters, reportedly from the Muslim community too shouted for the release of Borbora in front of the Jorhat Police Station on Wednesday night, the source stated.

The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate granted bail to Borbora on Thursday afternoon after the complainant filed a petition in the said court reportedly stating that he (tenant) had no objection to the accused granted bail by the court, the source said.
