One accused in gang rape case arrested

MANGALDAI, July 29 - The Rowta Police in Udalguri district on July 28 finally managed to arrest one of the accused persons, involved in the heinous gang rape of a helpless mother of two minor children on July 22 last, and also seized one of the vehicles used by the accused persons.

The arrested accused person has been identified as one Azar Ali (a driver-cum-commercial vehicle owner) of village Sidhakhowa under Rowta Police Station. The police also seized his Tata Magic goods carrier vehicle bearing registration number AS 14 C 3993.

On the other hand, as many as 200 activists of the Udalguri district committee of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU), All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Students� Union (AKRASU), All Bodo Students� Union (ABSU), Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) in cooperation with the Rowta anchalik unit of the All Adivasi Students� Association of Assam (AASAA), Assam Bengali Youth Students� Federation (ABYSF) and Rowta Chambers of Commerce today resorted to a two-hour road blockade on NH 15 demanding immediate arrest of the accused persons involved in the heinous crime.

They also submitted a memorandum to the State Home Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri. However, though the office bearers of all the six organisations had requested the office bearers of the All Assam Minority Students� Union (AAMSU), Muslim Students Union of Assam (MUSA) and the All Bodoland Muslim Students� Union (ABMSU) to take part in the road blockade programme to express their solidarity, but the latter allegedly did not respond to their appeal.

It may be recalled here that on July 22, a gang of nearly 12 antisocial elements outraged the modesty of a village woman while she was returning from Dalgaon after submission of her NRC update application form in the afternoon.
