Old Saraighat bridge reopens today

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 19 - Repair work on the upper deck (road portion) of the Saraighat rail-cum-road bridge (old Saraighat bridge) over the Brahmaputra has been completed and it will be reopened for vehicular traffic tomorrow.

Pranav Jyoti Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), today said that the work has been completed within the target date of June 20.

The repair work on the bridge had started on March 23 and since then all vehicular movements between the north and the south banks of the Brahmaputra had been diverted through the new Saraighat bridge, which is a road-only bridge.

So the traffic problem in the area, which has been witnessed since past three months, will ease from tomorrow, Sharma said.

The repair work in the old Saraighat bridge involved replacing all the 54 slabs on the entire upper deck along with replacement of 11 expansion joints over the pillars.
