OIL sent packing, Nagaland Police win

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 3 Former champions Oil India Limited Football Club, Duliajan disappointed supporters in their opening match of the 59th Bordoloi Trophy Tournament.

In ideal playing conditions at the Nehru Stadium here today, the team from Duliajan went down 1-2 to Assam Regimental Centre, Shillong despite taking an early lead.

In the other match, Nagaland Police prevailed over luckless Morning Star Club of Diphu 1-0.

The OIL boys looked quite rusty and some of the well known names in State football like F Wary, HL Routa, Mthew Thangjom, Zaidin Hmar, Biplob Sonowal failed to live up to their image.

The game was just eight minutes old when defender Jyotish Basumatary nodded the ball into the goal off a set-piece floater sent by HL Routa (1-0).

But after conceding the goal, the Regimental players built pressure on opponent with collective efforts and got the equaliser in the 20th minute through Ajit Kumar Singh (1-1). L Bishorjit Singh fired the winning goal in the 33rd minute with a smart drive (2-1).

OIL team official Akon Sonowal later said after playing in the CK Sarma Trophy at Dibrugarh in June, the team hardy had practice together. The coach from Kolkata also left Duliajan all of a sudden due to some family problem.

If things go like this, the OIL team will find it difficult in the qualifying round for the Federation Cup which will be held in Silchar. They have also released the foreign players due to which their forward line became weak.

Nagaland Police-Morning Star: In comparison to the ARC- OIL match, the encounter between Nagaland Police and Morning Star of Diphu was more lively. It was a fast-paced game as players of both the teams kept the momentum on with some quick exchanges of the ball.

However, lady luck did not smile on them as they hit the wooden frame on several occasions. Their captain Abraham Goodluck and Y Bobo Singh virtually tore apart the Police defence but could not score due to some silly mistakes.

The Nagaland Police, most of the time, were fighting with their backs to the wall but making a counter-attack in the 16th minute, Kh Ramesh netted the match winning goal.

Todays match: Sunrise vs AP Blues.
