Oil cos facing problems from local bodies in State

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 19 The multinational companies engaged by the Oil India Limited (OIL) and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGCL) have always been facing problems due to demands for money from various organisations, while a new trend has emerged, that of different organisations submitting their own list of candidates whenever any company launches a recruitment drive.

Oil industry sources told The Assam Tribune that different organisations have always been demanding that locals should be appointed. But now with most companies engaged by the OIL and ONGCL agreeing to appoint locals through proper interview, different bodies started sending their own lists of candidates to be appointed. This has complicated the matter as it is not possible to accommodate all those whose names figure in the lists and if this trend continues, the possibility of several such companies pulling out of Assam cannot be ruled out.

Sources said that the action of the organisations that sent lists of candidates to be appointed not only created problems for the companies concerned, but also led to deprivation of the local deserving candidates, who would have got employment opportunities in multinational companies.

Sources revealed that recently a US-based multinational company engaged by the OIL and ONGCL held interviews for a few posts, but they were flooded with letters of recommendations from different organisations, including the All Assam Students Union (AASU), All Tai Ahom Students Union, AJYCP, Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Brihattar Asomiya Yuba Mancha, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad, Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti etc., and all the organisations gave lists of candidates to be appointed.

Sources said that the company has already written to the leaders of all those organisations, clarifying its stand on the issue of appointments. The letter said that the company was committed to appointing local youths in non-specialised jobs and held interviews in the ITIs located in Tinsukia and Simaluguri in collaboration with the Directorate of Employment and Craftsmen Training. The Directorate also issued prior notification to the ITIs and to the local youths registered with the employment exchanges.

The letter said that the selection was to be made only on merit, but with different organisations giving lists of their own candidates, the situation became complicated. The company further said that such action by the organisations would deprive the deserving local candidates. The company further said that a number of persons from Assam, employed by the company are working successfully not only in different parts of India, but also in other parts of the world.
