Officials visit proposed site for waste management facility

By Correspondent

JORABAT, March 3 - With the State government planning to set up an integrated solid waste management facility (ISWMF) for the Guwahati Capital Region, a team of officials from the district administration and Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) today visited one of the sites identified for the project near Jorabat ahead of preparation of the detailed project report (DPR).

It has been learnt that a 27-bigha plot covered by dag number 32 in Tamulikuchi NC under Sonapur mouza has been identified for the facility.

However, the proposed site, located behind the Goat Research Station (GRS) at Byrnihat, was not found suitable for construction of the ISWMF, following which, the administration has now proposed to swap the land with the GRS, to set up the facility along the highway.

It may be mentioned that the Goat Research Station has been running since 1973. Interestingly, it is the only goat research station in Assam and the North East, located at 13th Mile near Jorabat, under the Directorate of Research (vety) of the Assam Agricultural University. It has helped transform the living standards of people involved in goat farming through various schemes and programmes.

Meanwhile, concerned citizens of the area have opposed the move and demanded shifting of the proposed ISWMF site to some other place.
