Officials visit Jorabat to review post-eviction scene

By Correspondent

JORABAT, Sept 14 - Under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (M), Virendra Mittal, a team comprising ADC P Mahanta, Circle Officer of Sonapur Revenue Circle Jenifer Yashmin Choudhury and officials of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) today visited the Jorabat area to review the situation in the aftermath of the recent eviction drive.

The week-long eviction drive was carried out by the district administration to mitigate the flood woes in the area.

It is understood that the DC also had a short discussion with the NHAI officials over the long-standing demand of the local residents to increase the height of a culvert near the Jorabat trijunction. The residents believe that the low height of the culvert is responsible for the inundation of the National Highway 37 here as the storm water does not get ample space to flow below the culvert.

The DC also directed clearing of the debris under the culvert and said that he would personally review the cleaning works.

Meanwhile, the team inspected the drain from Jorabat to Byrnihat along with personnel of the State Water Resources Department.

An important meeting with all the departments concerned will be held on September 21 to formulate a future action plan.

The local residents also pointed out to the visiting team, the alleged unscientific construction of a concrete drain. They alleged foul play as the construction company has not completed the drain since the works had commenced three years back.
