BARPETA, June 26 - The students of Madhab Choudhury College, Barpeta under the leadership of its students union organised a protest march yesterday over the long occupation of the college by the authority concerned for election purposes. Boycotting classes, they marched towards the office of the Deputy Commissioner and demanded that all classrooms be vacated immediately.
The college campus was requisitioned by the district administration for conducting the Lok Sabha elections. The process of constructing shades for distribution and acceptance of materials began several days ahead of the date of polling. Rooms of the college were used as strong rooms and offices of the various cells constituted for smooth conduct of the polls.
Elections to the 6 no. Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency was held on April 23 last and counting completed on May 23. However, it is a matter of grave concern that several rooms of the college are still occupied by the administration in the name of preservation of EVMs and other confidential materials. Though more than one month has elapsed since the declaration of the result, the rooms used for this purpose are yet to be vacated. As a result, normal activities of the college including classes have been severely affected.
Requisition of this educational institution for such a long time have irked the students who are the worst sufferers and, consequently they resorted to the path of agitation . They warned of a vigorous movement in the days to come if their demands are not fulfilled.
