Occupants of city hills, hillocks threaten stir over land rights

By AJIT PATOWARY

GUWAHATI, Oct 27 - Occupants of 18 hills and hillocks of Guwahati have declared their resolve to wrest their land settlement rights over the plots of land they are occupying, whatever may be the consequences.

They also announced that the failure of the Government to grant them their land settlement rights over the plots of land they are now occupying would force them to resume their agitation with effect from November 8 next to make the Government concede to their Constitutional rights for land settlement.

This resolve of the residents of the city hills and hillocks was announced at a meeting of the representatives of these hill dwellers held at the Guwahati Mati Pattakaran Sangram Samiti headquarters in Guwahati on Sunday with Samiti president Prabinjyoti Kalita in the chair.

The representatives of the hill dwellers resented the latest decision of the State Cabinet not to grant land settlement rights to the occupants of the hills and hillocks and the wetlands.

They demanded that the decision on the issue should be reviewed by the State Cabinet or else the hill dwellers are determined to resume their stir to assert their legitimate rights over the plots of land they are now occupying, with effect from November 8.

The stir will continue till the State Government concedes to their demand, they warned.
